Our Story

It began less than 30 years ago in a home kitchen—my mama had beaten the odds. She had grown up in the low-fat era, and years of useless dieting had plagued her. As a young teenager, she was diagnosed with kidney failure, and told she would never bear children. But with a determined will and courage to do something for herself, she began the long journey to rejuvenation. Grandma hauled her around from doctor to herbalist, believing there was a better choice than surgery to remove ‘useless organs’. Through much research and many appointments with specialists Mama learned about true health. With real nutrition, healing can happen. And it did. Mama began to eat better, giving her body the nutrients it needed to heal itself. Her kidneys gradually regained their normal functions. As we came along, she discovered the value of wholesome foods, herbs and natural therapies, and in her little kitchen, she created her own remedies. Becoming healthy through using natural products was truly a joy for her. She began to share her story with family and friends, which meant we always had an ‘open house’ for not only them, but also for their family and friends. As a busy mother, Mama wanted to be at home with her children, but she could never turn away someone in need. In time, mixing up the recipes for her healthy products became too much for our small kitchen. Her passion had grown into a business, and Mama was continually developing new products for new needs. We had over a dozen formulas being manufactured, as well as a collection of other fine products which we also sold. Mama pursued her love for research, development and teaching about true health. She always said, “What we keep out of our products is just as important as what we put in them. These are for my babies, why would I want to feed them a tiny bit of bad stuff? I don’t!” Eventually, she was spending more time running her business than on her love—us chicks. The family considered closing the business. Our supportive families protested—we need true health products. Where can we get something comparable to your nutritional products? This was considered and we set about growing a mail order business—Mother Hen Products, managed entirely by the younger generation with the same principles and values as taught by Mama.
